Distinguished medical gaint, Dr Michael Ezenyirioha clocks 80

It will be an assemblage of Who-is-Who in the medical profession, as a medical gaint Dr Michael Ajala Sunday Ezenyirioha  is honoured by family, friends and professional colleagues as he marks his 80th birthday.

All roads will lead to his home town of Enugu Agu Achi, in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State, venue of the celebration kicking off at 10am on Saturday 12th of September, 2020.

A distinguished Gynaecologist and Obstetrician, Dr Michael Ajala Sunday Ezenyirioha is the founder of the legendary Julius Ezenyirioha Memorial Hospital & Maternity located in Enugu

Ezenyirioha who holds the traditional title of Ezeafojuru, is an alumnus of University of Ibadan and University of South Manchester Didsbury, United Kingdom.

Below is a biography of the highly respected surgeon

Sir Dr Michael Ajala Sunday Ezenyirioha was born to the family of late Mr. Julius Oluedo and late Mrs. Felicia Uduefi Ezenyirioha at Umuori village Enugu-agu (Mbaogu Kingdom), Achi in Oji-River Local Government Area of Enugu State on 12th day of September 1940. He is the first born in a family of seven children comprising five males and two females. His father was a peasant farmer/petty trader and his mother was a full-time housewife. Dr. Mike grew up with unimaginable deprivation and poverty; his father, late Mr. Julius Oluedo Ezenyirioha was actually a dogged fighter with “Lion’s” will to survive as an ardent Christian.

Dr. Michael Ezenyirioha started his primary school education at Emmanuel Anglican Church School, Enugu-agu Achi from 1950 – 1952, and completed same at Central School Isikwe Achi in 1957 with First School Leaving Certificate in flying colours. He proceeded to the famous Methodist College Uzuakoli in present day Abia State from 1958 – 1964 for his Secondary and Higher School Education. While at the school, he was a Prefect and Sports Captain of the school and won the Victor Ludorum cup as the best athlete of the year 1963/64.

However, it is very pertinent to point out certain sign posts in his school days. This is because these events clearly showed that the hands of God were on Dr. Michael Ezenyirioha. These events made him conscious of the fact that God has a purpose for his life and till date he has not lost sight of them. At Methodist College Uzuakoli, he has a myriad of financial incapacitations. Being the first born in a family of seven, it was not easy for his father to finance his education from his farming and petty trading. After his first year in school, he was the best all round student in his class, but to go back to school after the first year to continue was very difficult, if not impossible. Efforts by his father then to rally round his kindred to raise seventeen pounds seven shillings being school fees for one term failed woefully. So he ended up going back to school for the second year without paying his school fees; not even a part of it.

While in Class 2, he learnt of the award of scholarship to bright and indigent students and was encouraged to apply for this by late Dr. Ephraim Ahanonu, who was his senior in class in the same school. Luckily, Dr. Mike was awarded the scholarship by the Eastern Regional Scholarship Board worth Seventeen pounds every term. The school never worried him about the balance seven shillings until the last term in Class 5, before the Cambridge School Certificate Examination. So the accumulated balance against his school fees ledger was fourteen pounds, ten shillings and he was sent home along with other students of his class in same dilemma. Before this development, Dr. Mike had attended an interview for recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force and was recruited as Sub-Inspector of Police under training.

Based on his overall performance in the school, he was also offered automatic admission into Higher School to choose between Maths, Maths/Physics and Physics/Chemistry, Zoology for Engineering and Medicine respectively. Unfortunately the journey home in search of fourteen pounds ten shillings being the outstanding on school fees up to form 5 yielded only three pounds which one of his relations borrowed from a friend. As he got back, the school never asked him anything about the remaining amount. Instead the expatriate Principal of the school offered Dr. Mike a temporary appointment as “Library-Hand” with a monthly emolument of six shillings which the school would use to offset his indebtedness. The Finger of God continued to point at the young Mike when his Mathematics teacher, Mr. G. Wells offered him a twenty pounds worth of scholarship per year for the Higher School education as a needy but very brilliant boy. He enjoyed this scholarship until he left the Higher School.

Post Higher School, Dr. Mike taught briefly in the same school before proceeding to the Prestigious University of Ibadan to study Medicine & Surgery. He had first completed the first session in the University of Ibadan when Nigeria – Biafra war broke out. His father was very sick with perforated peptic ulcer and later died from same in 1968 on the eve of the fall of Achi town to Nigeria troops. The whole world appeared to have collapsed on the young Mike as he was faced with the stark reality and responsibility of looking after his mother and six siblings. They all became refugees in the neighbouring towns from Inyi and parts of Orumba Local Government Areas. He ended up at Ajalli General Hospital where some of the medical students were allowed to assist young Doctors attending to war casualties from the raging theatres of war; suturing gun-shot wounds. With the end of the civil war in 1970, Dr. Mike managed to go back to the University of Ibadan courtesy of the general scholarship offered then by the Federal Government of Nigeria to complete his studies.

In 1974, Dr. Michael Ajala Sunday Ezenyirioha bagged the MBBS (Honours) Degree of the University of Ibadan in Medicine & Surgery. He was at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu for his Housemanship before he left for the General Hospital Oshogbo for his National Youth Service Corps. Thereafter, Dr. Mike secured employment and further training for postgraduate degree in Obstetrics & Gynaecology in 1976 at UNTH Enugu. He was there progressively as Senior Health Officer, Registrar and Senior Registrar until 1985. Following his successes in postgraduate examinations, Dr. Mike was sent abroad in 1983 to University of South Manchester Didsbury, United Kingdom, Dept of Obstetrics & Gynaecology where he worked, studied and sharpened his expertise under Professor Max Elstein, a famous South African Jew Obstetrician & Gynaecologist.

During his training at UNTH Enugu, Dr. Mike ran a family clinic in his father’s house where he saw and treated all sorts of cases and he had the opportunity then of selecting patients who were used for medical students’ examinations. These classes of patients were treated free of charge after their examination. Achi people benefitted immensely from this activity. Suffice it to add that this very activity helped Dr. Mike in building a big clientele of patients and their relations when he established his own full medical practice. Due to the dearth of opportunities for advancement then at UNTH Enugu and even employment elsewhere, he ventured into full time private medical practice in 1986 after his postgraduate training.

His hospital, JULIUS EZENYIRIOHAL MEMORIAL HOSPITAL & MATERNITY started in 1986 in a rented uncompleted apartment at 32 Nike Road, Abakpa. He was there struggling with the harsh realities of novel medical practice before he secured the present permanent site at 39 Atani street after the very busy 32 Nike Road. His practice had impacted many young and upcoming Doctors notable among whom are to mention but a few. Dr. Eric Oluedo (the former Commissioner for Rural Development, former Commissioner for Commerce & Industry and now Director Visit Every Community (VEC) Project Enugu State), Venerable Prof. Ike of the Anglican Communion now a Consultant Cardiologist; Dr. Frank Okolo CMD ESUTH Teaching Hospital, PARKLANE; Dr. Onyire, a Consultant Paediatrician at Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital and a lot more.

Dr. MAS Ezenyirioha was admitted as a Fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (FMCOG) in 1990 after passing the Part II and final examinations. His dissertation was BACTERIOSPERMIA AND MALE INFERTILITY IN NIGERIA
