Covid-19: FG declares 63 Nigerians, 27 foreigners wanted
The federal government has declared 63 Nigerians and 27 foreigners wanted over violation of COVID-19 guidelines.
A statement issued on Sunday night by the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on COVID-19 and signed by its Chairman and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, said the identified individuals failed to observe the newly instituted mandatory protocols recently put in place against the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the statement, the list, which contains a total of 27 Indians and 63 Nigerians, arrived in Nigeria through the Muritala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the PSC, while the affected airlines are Ethiopian airline and Qatar airways, the 27 Indian violators were categorised as unregistered.
The statement gave the dates of their arrival to be between May 8 and 15, noting that they “evaded the mandatory seven-day quarantine for persons arriving from restricted countries.”
Two dead as Gunmen Burn INEC Office In Anambra
Two have been confirmed dead when unknown gunmen on Sunday set ablaze the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Anambra State.
The assailants had embarked on a mission to also attack the Police ‘B’ Divisional Headquarters close to the INEC office to cause severe destruction, but it became an unsuccessful operation as the attempt was repelled by security operatives who engaged them in a fierce firefight, killing two of them in the process.
However, there was no information on whether or not any security operative was killed.
The office of the electoral umpire and the police station are both located in Awka, the state capital.
Buhari Directs National Flag To Fly At Half-Mast, Declares Monday Work-Free Day For Military Personnel
President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that the national flag be flown at half-mast in all public buildings, facilities, and official residences across the country.
The directive is with effect from Monday to Wednesday.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, announced in a statement on Sunday.
He explained that the presidential directive was to honour the memory and services of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru, as well as the senior military officers and service members who died in a plane crash on Friday last week.
Mustapha added that the President has approved Monday as a work-free day for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
The remains of the late Attahiru and 10 other officers who died in the plane crash in Kaduna were laid to rest on Saturday at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja.
Nigeria’s GDP Records 0.51% Growth In 2021 First Quarter
The National Bureau of Statistics says Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has recorded a growth of 0.51 per cent (year-on-year) in real terms in the first quarter of 2021.
This was disclosed in the latest Nigerian Gross Domestic Product Report released on Sunday.
It noted that the new figure represented two consecutive quarters of growth following the negative growth rates recorded in the second and third quarters of 2020.
The rate of growth recorded in the first quarter of 2021 was slower than the 1.87 per cent rate recorded in the first quarter of 2020.
However, the figure was higher than the 0.11 per cent recorded in the fourth quarter of 2020, indicative of a slow but continuous recovery.
Leicester Blow Champions League Chance As Kane Signs Off With Golden Boot
Leicester blew the chance to qualify for the Champions League for just the second time in the club’s history as the Foxes lost 4-2 to Tottenham on Sunday.
Leicester spent more days in the Premier League top four than any other club this season, but for the second consecutive year, they fell away in the final weeks of the campaign to miss out on the riches and prestige of Champions League football.
Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa opened the door for the FA Cup winners to take advantage and move into fourth.
