Nigeria receives the first shipment of J&J vaccine

The Federal Government on Thursday took delivery of the first shipment of 177,600 Johnson and Johnson vaccine doses from the African Union.

The doses were inspected by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency in Abuja, The Executive Director, NPHCDA, Dr Faisal Shuaib, who received the vaccine at the National Strategic Cold Store, in Abuja, said Nigeria was among the first 10 African countries to receive the vaccine through the partnership.

He further noted that the 177,600 doses would step up efforts to battle the third wave of infections across the country, noting that the single-shot COVID-19 vaccine was the first of its monthly supplies under an arrangement with AU nations.

Senate urges young Nigerians to ensure food security 

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Ajibola Basiru, on Thursday to commemorate the International Youth Day 2021, said the youth have the capacity to deploy technology and innovations in the agricultural sector. In the statement titled ‘Senate Felicitates with Nigerian Youths, Charges Them on Food Security.

Basiru said the federal parliament identifies with the Nigerian youth and congratulates them for their resilience in contributing to national development.

The Senate’s spokesman noted that the theme, ‘Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Plenary Health,’ was relevant “at this period in our national life…especially coming at the time of rising staple food prices and at the time when our youths should focus and divert more energy to the practice of agriculture.

Bank CEOs threaten forex fraudsters with arrest, prosecution. 

The chief executives of deposit money banks in the country have warned customers against using fraudulent methods to get access to foreign exchange from banks, saying those caught perpetrating such acts would be prosecuted. Stating that Some of the fraudulent activities observed by the executives include using expired travel tickets and fake passports in a bid to procure forex.

The banks’ warning comes amid complaints by some customers who lamented that they continued to experience difficulty in accessing forex from banks, forcing them to resort to Bureaux de Change.

The Central Bank of Nigeria had on July 27, at the end of the Monetary Policy Committee meeting, announced the stoppage of forex sale to the BDCs, saying they had turned themselves into agents that facilitate graft and corrupt activities of people who seek illicit fund flow and money laundering in Nigeria. The CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, said the apex bank would channel a significant portion of its weekly allocation meant for BDCs to commercial banks to meet legitimate forex demand for ordinary Nigerians and businesses.

Nigeria shuts UK High Commission as diplomats test positive for COVID-19

The Nigerian High Commission in London, United Kingdom (UK), has been shut after officials tested positive for COVID-19.

According to the letter from the High Commission, the closure will last 10 days, beginning from Thursday, when the strains of the deadly disease were detected in the diplomats.

The embassy did not name the concerned officials nor their ranks. In the memo, titled, ‘Closure of Nigeria High Commission, London,’ dated August 12, the country’s High Commission in the United Kingdom detailed circumstances leading to the move.

Lukaku Rejoins Chelsea On Five-Year Deal

Chelsea have re-signed Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan for £97.5m.

The Champions League holders confirmed Lukaku’s return on their official website on Thursday.

The 28-year-old returns to Stamford Bridge on a five-year deal, having left the Blues to join Everton for in 2014. Belgium’s all-time top goalscorer is also the most expensive player ever sold by a Serie A club, having become the third most expensive buy in Italian history when he joined Inter in the summer of 2019 from Manchester United for £74m.
