Nigeria launches the domestic gas policy for optimal gas utilization in the country.
Flagging off the official launch of the operation of the Nigeria Gas transportation Network Code in Abuja on Monday, the Minister of State, Petroleum Resources, Timipreye Silver, said the event would widen the utilization of gas for development.
“We see the network code as an opportunity to widen the utilization of gas and ensuring that federal government’s objective of making gas a major source of income and development comes to reality”.
He said the launch of the programme would help the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, address the issues of gas flaring and waste pollution, grow gas infrastructure, and build the domestic gas market.
In his remarks, the Group Managing Director, Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Mele Kyari, said the organization is at the center of delivering gas to both the domestic and international markets.
He added that the flag off would facilitate the transportation of gas from source to the end-user, saying that some of the finance structures are hinged on tariff and gas transportation.
“We can’t get that right until there’s the right framework which the network code provides.”
The Managing Director/CEO of the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, Sarki Auwalu, said the launch was aimed at fostering Domestic Gas Utilization for Optimal Gas Revolution in Nigeria.
According to him, the licensing will involve transporters; shippers, and network agents, while the administration will involve maturing and domestic gas market, and then monitoring is to optimize network code’s impact on gas market performance.
