Covid-19: Teenage students lead the fight with donation of homemade face shields to hospitals in Enugu State

In a rare show of continued patriotism, ingenuity and empathy, two siblings Kamdi and Indrani Okeke have produced and donated three hundred and fifty face shields, as contribution to the fight against Covid-19 pandemic for distribution to seven District Hospitals in Enugu State located in Nsukka, Enugu Ezike, Isi Uzo, Agbani, Awgu, Udi, and Uwani Enugu for the safety of the frontline health workers.

During the peak of the Coronavirus crisis,  the teenagers who are secondary school students had made a similar donation to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, ESUTH, Parklane, Enugu, and University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Ituku Ozalla.

initiative, aimed at eradicating the escalating spread of the virus in the country.

According to the youngsters “the face shields should be distributed to the seven district hospitals for the safety of the frontline fighters, emphasizing that the present community spread of the virus has automatically increased the patient traffic in the district hospitals thereby exposing the health workers to greater danger of corona virus infection”.

They said they were inspired by the existential danger “in the heroic services of the health officials on the frontline of the fight against the pandemic, believing they could make use of their talent and skills to give back to the society in community service”.

They said it was their “personal voluntary decision to extend the products of their ideas for safety of humanity” promising to produce and distribute more productive equipment to health workers in more hospitals in the state.

While receiving the items, the Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Emmanuel Obi, flanked by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Ifeanyi Agujiobi, said that State Ministry of Health and the health officials in the state had been putting their best to ensure the safety of members of the society who depend on them in this challenging period of Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr. Obi commended the children “for making proper use of the Covid-19-enforced-out-of-school time to showcase their spectacularly responsive initiative and daunting efforts at early stages of their life which holds a strong and good promise for their future, emphasizing that children, such as they are, embarking on this level of selfless community service shows that there is hope for a better Nigeria”.

The Commissioner said that “the protective equipment would be judiciously distributed to all the district hospitals in the state that are billed to benefit in the offer as this would translate to enhancement of greater service delivery in the fight against the corona virus pandemic in the state.

The transparent plastic cover worn overhead, with the face projected downwards to protect the facial region, from the mouth up to the forehead above the eyes, is an improvement from the common face or nose mask available in the market.
