Deep matchete cuts inflicted on both sides as cultists and vigilante group clash in Abuja
There was tension in the Abattoir area of Mpape suburb of Abuja on Monday morning when the vigilante accosted a young man simply known as Odion, alleged to be a ring leader of a cult group in the area.
According to eyewitness account, Odion was returning at about 2 a.m. when the vigilante group, generally called the community policing formation, stopped him and demanded for his identification and where he was coming from, he could not give them convincing answer.
They, thereafter, descended on him, beat him into pulp, allegedly inflicting matchete cuts on his body and head and wanted to take him to an unidentified location.
But Odion, stoutly built, fought them off to the extent of disarming one of the vigilante members, and used his matchete to cut of a finger of one of them and gave another a big cut on the hand in what he termed “Self-defense.”
According to the Chairman of the Vigilante Task force, Effiong Friday, a group of area boys were mobilized, shortly after the incident, allegedly by Mr. Odion to the house of the Chairman of Abattoir Community, Victor Nathan, where the boys beat to stupor the Chairman in the presence of his wife and kids, for what they said were “his roles in the establishment of Vigilante in the area.”
Signaturetv.org correspondent who followed up the story said both Odion, the CSO of the Abattoir Community vigilante group, Mpape and those who were injured are at the Mpape Police Station,
The Divisional Police Officer, DPO, at Mpape Police Station, Victor Asebiomo, who confirmed the arrest of those involved in the early morning fracas said his officers were investigating the matter.
