The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has petitioned the Nigerian Air Force, over the alleged killing of Steve Nduka, a lecturer, in the computer science department of Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Imo state on Monday January 25th, 2021. The petition addressed to the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Ishiaka Amao and signed by the president of ASUP, Comrade Anderson Ezeibe, the union demanded the relocation of the Air Force base in Naze, because of complaints by the Polytechnic community about excess violence from soldiers in the environment. The union called for an unfettered investigation into the matter with a view to bringing the killers of Steve Nduka and his friend to book and adequate compensation to the families of the deceased. A member of the national caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC), AVM Frank Ajobena (retd), has exonerated the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege from the crisis that led to the suspension of the party’s nationwide registration and revalidation exercise in Delta State. Ajobena, a former executive director on the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) said it was not possible for a person to hijack the party exercise. There were allegations on Wednesday that Senator Omo-Agege in collusion with the state caretaker committee chairman, Jones Erue, hijacked the process in Delta State, forcing the national leadership to suspend the exercise. Among those that raised the alarm of alleged hijack was the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo who hails from Delta. But Ajobena urged Keyamo and other stakeholders of the party to rally round Senator Omo-Agege to grow APC in the state. While urging Keyamo to concentrate on his Ministerial job and stop playing divisive politics, he said there was the need for all party leaders to be united and work towards bringing people into the party. A journalist in Imo State, Precious Nwadike, has allegedly been beaten to a pulp by a brother to the state governor, Hope Uzodimma. Nwadike, the editor of an Owerri-based newspaper, Community Watchdog, said he was beaten by the governor’s sibling, Uche, on Port Harcourt Road in Owerri. Uche is alleged to be one of the contractors handling road projects in the state. Uche, who reportedly moves around with police escorts, allegedly slapped the journalist, who unknowingly drove past the site of his road renovation work. Nwadike, who was bruised, battered and left unconscious, was revived and taken to hospital by passers-by. Seven governorship candidates in the September 19, 2020 Edo State governorship election, on the platform of, Edo State Former Governorship Candidates Forum, (EFGCF), on Wednesday, tasked governor Godwin Obaseki on the need of procuring high-tech security devices for the security agencies to stem the tide of insecurity in the state. The acting chairman of the group, Bishop Akhalamhe of Zenith Labour Party, (ZLP) made the call in Benin City while speaking on the spate of insecurity in the state Akhalamhe said that the governor should procure spy equipment such as helicopters, CCTV cameras etc to support our security agencies. Akhalamhe while listing the group’s positions on the level of insecurity in the state said all flashpoints should make it mandatory for every community to set up a security committee to defend their land. President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has warned politicians and ethic champions against making unguarded comments capable of escalating the spate of insecurity including the herdsmen crisis rocking parts of the country. According to a statement by Lawan’s Special Assistant on Press, Ezrel Tabiowo, the Senate President made this known during plenary on Wednesday. He said that recently in most parts of the country, political leaders have decided to throw caution to the wind. Lawan added that Political leaders must be careful of what they say in a very provocative environment, because the people listen to them as their leaders. He also underscored the need for increased partnership between the Federal, States and Local Governments in the fight against insecurity.
