Two Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Kidnapping 3YearOld Boy In Kano

 

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano, sentenced two men, Umar Salisu and Abba Tijjani, to life imprisonment for kidnapping a three-year-old boy, Attahiru.

The defendants, were convicted on a two-count charge, ranging from conspiracy to kidnapping.

 

The presiding Judge, Justice J.K Daggard, in his ruling, held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt against the first and second defendant, and to this extent sentenced them to life imprisonment.

 

However, the judge noted that the prosecution did not prove its case against the third defendant(Alhassan Jamilu) and therefore discharged and acquitted him.

Earlier, the prosecution Counsel, Mrs Hassana Habib, informed the court that the convicts committed the offence on December 2 and 8, 2017, at Gobirawa Turba Quarters Kano.

Nigeria Records New 110 COVID-19 Cases From 6 States

 

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) registered 110 new COVID-19 cases in the country.

NCDC disclosed this on its official website on Thursday morning.

The public health agency noted that the country’s fatality toll stood at 2,122, while the new cases jerked up total infections to 168,110.

It added that the 110 cases were reported from six states and the FCT, with Lagos State recording 88, bringing the total number of confirmed infections in the state to 59,987, with 58,515 discharged and 456 deaths.

The NCDC said that Rivers recorded 12 new cases of COVID-19, noting that “this brings the total number of confirmed cases in the state to 7,351 with 7,187 discharged and 101 deaths.”

Other states were Akwa Ibom; 4, Jigawa; 2, Ogun; 2, while the FCT and Kano State recorded one each.#

 

2022 VAT: Buhari Regime To Generate N2 Trillion Taxing Nigerians

The federal government  says it plans to generate N2.62 trillion revenue from taxing Nigerians through VAT in 2022.

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, disclosed this after the meeting of the council, which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to her, Medium Term Expenditure Framework and the Fiscal Strategy Paper (MTEF/ FSP) describes the federal government’s socio-economic and developmental objectives and priorities for the reporting period of 2022 to 2024 and the financial strategies to put in place and policies to achieve the priorities.

She said her ministry presented a memo to FEC with a 2022 projected revenue of N6.54 trillion to  accrue to the Federation Account and Value Added Tax (VAT), projecting  the revenue to increase in 2023 to N9.15 trillion.#

 

Ex-President Jacob Zuma Surrenders To Police, Begins 15-Month Jail Term

 

Former President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma surrendered himself to Police on Wednesday despite initial defiance.

Zuma begins 15-months jail term for contempt of court after a long legal battle.

A statement by Police spokesperson Lirandzu Themba confirmed in a statement that the ex-leader was in custody.

Last week, the Constitutional Court gave judgement against Zuma who was in power from 2009 to 2018 for failing to appear at a hearing in February of the inquiry led by Deputy Chief Justice, Raymond Zondo.

In his reaction, Zuma condemned the decision of the judges to sentence him for shunning a corruption inquiry.

He likened them to the white minority apartheid while speaking to supporters at his home in Nklandla, in the Kwazulu Natal province.
