NBC directive’s vague; without freedom media becomes PR — Mustapha Isa, Guild of Editors’ President
President, Nigeria Guild of Editors, NGE Mustapha Isa, has said the directive from the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, censoring report and review of terrorist attacks and victims across the country was vague.
Isah added that editors and security agencies have mutual interests, noting that too much would have been better explained in a confidential meeting.
The NGE President said this on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily on Monday morning.
Speaking further, Isah said the media report events and do not create the stories.
NBC, in a letter dated July 7, by the Director, Broadcast Monitoring, Francis Aiyetan, on behalf of the Director-General, asked stations to stop “glamourising the activities of insurgents, terrorists, kidnappers, bandits.”
She added that giving details of either the security issues or victims of security challenges will jeopardise the efforts of the Nigerian soldiers and other security agents.

Ohanaeze urged the Governors to explore their cordial relationship with President Muhammadu Buhari to negotiate the release of the detained IPOB leader, stressing that such would bring total peace to the South-East zone.
The Chidi Ibeh led Ohanaeze Ndigbo in a statement, said it could no longer afford to stop Kanu’s supporters from hitting the streets in protest against the continued detention of their leader.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Farouk Yahaya has charged officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army to remain apolitical and continue to discharge their duties professionally in the defence of the Fatherland and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Speaking in a Goodwill message ahead of the Eid-El Kabir celebrations on Tuesday, Lieutenant General Yahaya vowed to reward excellence and achievements by troops in the Discharge of their Duties, adding that indiscipline, indolence, negligence and all untoward acts will not be condoled in the service
On issues of motivation for troops, Yahaya said he approved the issue of Hilux vehicles as official cars to Regimental Sergeant Majors, RSM beginning with AHQ and AHQ Gar RSMs, and this will cascade down the ladder to the battalion RSMs in due course.
He also authorised the construction of befitting tied down accommodation for RSMs and renovation of such existing structures.
Eid-El-Kabir: IGP Assures Nigerians Of Sustained Efforts At Improving Security
In a similar development, The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba has assured the nation of sustained efforts by the Force in fighting crimes and criminality and improving public safety and security across the country.
His assurance on Sunday was contained in a communique titled, ‘Eid-el-Kabir: IGP assures sustained efforts at improving public safety and security, by the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba.
In his statement, the IGP charged Commissioners of Police (CPs) in all the States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and their supervisory Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs), to beef-up security ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, to prevent any untoward situation in their Areas of Responsibility (AoR) throughout the Eid-el-Kabir season and beyond.
The IGP equally warned that personnel deployed must be professional and mindful of the fundamental rights of the citizens, and discharge their responsibilities with all sense of decorum and alertness.

According to US health officials, a current spike in Covid-19 deaths and illnesses around the country is almost exclusively hitting people who remain unvaccinated.

Kano Pillars and Nasarawa United have intensified their chase for the Nigeria Professional Football League top position with vital victories on matchday 33.
