Protesting Benue pensioners lament, Say Okada riders have taken their wives
Hundreds of retired civil servants under the umbrella of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) Benue chapter have staged a peaceful protest in Makurdi over the alleged failure of the State Government to pay their entitlements of over 32 months.
“Benue state government is owing state pensioners 32 months and Local government 74 months,” chairman of NUP Benue state chapter, Comrade Akoso Orban, told Newsmen during the protest.
“As a result of nonpayment of pension and gratuity, pensioners are dying on a daily basis as most of them are on special diets and drugs but could not afford such maintenance diets or drugs.”he said
He added that due to hardship occasioned by nonpayment of their pension and gratuity, pensioners have lost their wives to Okada Boys because they were no longer economically productive enough to cater for them
He called on Benue state government to urgently pay them as they have huge responsibilities.
There was traffic gridlock for several hours from High- Level round about to Mr B roundabout in Makurdi as they protested accompanied by heavy security operatives.
Benue State Government was yet to react to the allegations as at press time.
