An Enugu-based group, Enugu State Citizens Support for Equity and Good Governance (ESCSEG), yesterday, said the state needs an experienced technocratic and professional with a clear vision for developing all sectors of the state’s economy in 2023.

Speaking with journalists at its secretariat in Enugu, its state Coordinator, Onyendozi E. Onwe, stressed that the group would not back any career politician or candidate without workable plans to develop the state.

“Career politicians are the problem of this country, for which Enugu State has its own fair share. Those who have made politics their only means of livelihood must be rejected at all levels of governance in 2023 if the state must continue to make progress,” he said.

On power shift to Enugu East Senatorial Zone, Onwe argued that the agitation was traceable to unequal distribution of resources among the component parts that make up a geographical entity.

“In saner climes, zoning does not make headlines but competence, capability, pedigree and proven integrity. But here, people believe that once a particular area is in charge, greater resources and attention would be channelled towards the development of that area at the detriment of the other areas,” he said.

Onwe, however, said the ESCSEG would support zoning arrangements backed by competence, capacity, proven integrity with a well-defined manifesto.

“We’ll support tested technocratic with a clear-cut vision of developing our state from where Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi would stop. As a matter of fact, we have set our machinery in motion towards shopping for an acceptable candidate for possible support.

“Last year, we toured 10 councils in collaboration with Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to sensitise the people on the importance of the ongoing continuous voter registration. We are taking another step towards ensuring that our people decide who governs them.”

“Few elites must not decide for us in 2023. People must decide and on this, I can assure you that ESCSEG will make it happen in Enugu State in the 2023 election,” he added. He advised the youths to resist the temptation of collecting gratifications to vote for unqualified and selfish politicians, as their future should remain paramount to them.
