Bill to rename Judicial Institute after Justice Mary Odili passes final reading
A Bill to name the Judical institute in Rivers State as Justice Mary Odili Judical Institute passed the 3rd reading at the Rivers State House of Assembly on Friday.. The Bill which was contained in the Rivers State Judical Amendment Bill 2023 also provides for an order of presendence to the three most senior Judges of the State when appointing the three High Court Judges in the State.
The Speaker of the Rivers state House of assembly, Ikuinyi O Ibani while speaking at Pleanary described the motion moved by the Leader of the House, Martins Amaewhule as a worthy cause judging from the impact Justice Mary Odili has had in the Judical system of the state. He enjoined members to carry on with their good works and to serve ernestly so that they will also be appreciated one day just like Justice Odili
The Leader of the House, Martins Amaewhule who raised the motion appealed to his colleagues to support the motion while describing Odili as one who has contributed immensely to Rivers State.
Also speaking on the second clause of the Bill which seeks that preference be given to the top three senior judges when appointing High Court Judges in the State, the leader of the house said it was important to avoid any form of ill feeling among Judges and to create a pathway for growth among Judges and avoid lobbying.
Signature TV Correspondent in Portharcourt Ifunanya Ilodianya reports that the bill was unanimously supported by the 13 members of the House present.
Mathew Dike member representing Tai constituency and Azeru Opara representing Port Harcourt III described the Bill as worthy of support saying that Mary Odili has played her role as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria efficiently and effectively.
