Veteran broadcast journalist Dr Segun Aderiye has called on President Bola Tinubu to sign the Society of Broadcasters bill into law.

Aderiye who made the call at the occasion of his 70th birthday in Lagos regretted “that since 1959 when the first crop of broadcasters entered the stage, through the defunct WNTV/WNBS, there had not been a constitutionally recognized professional body of broadcasters.

“I’m proud to be a key contributor to the process that has culminated in the passing of the bill for the establishment of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters SNB, by Nigeria’s 9th National Assembly, towards the end of the Buhari administration. The bill was laid before the former President for his accent; but unfortunately, pressing exigencies did not permit him to sign it into law.

“I wish at this juncture to humbly urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to please speedily sign the bill into law as soon as the current national assembly presents it to him. This will surely give the broadcasting profession in Nigeria the much needed legal backing to take its rightful place in the affairs of the nation”.

The event which featured a lecture “The Imperative of Peace in a Troubled World” given by Amb. (Dr) Martins Uhomoibhi, a former Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also featured the presentation of the book “Journey to Stardom”, an Autobiography of the celebrant.

The special guest of honour at the event former President Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida represented by Prof Tunde Adeniran, described Aderiye as a “fine gentleman and a highly efficient, courageous and diligent media practitioner with a high sense of national patriotism”.
