The National Rescue Movement (NRM), Ogun State Chapter, has condemned the government’s alleged sponsorship of protests against citizens exercising their constitutional right to demonstrate.

The NRM asserted that the Federal Government must heed the concerns of Nigerians and cease undermining these protests.

In a statement on Friday, acting state Chairman Olujobi Fayoyin pointed out the irony of current officials, who once protested while out of power, now attempting to suppress public dissent. He emphasized that such actions betray the trust of the citizens.

Fayoyin stated, “It is reckless and inhumane for the government to sponsor protests against those exercising their civic rights as bona fide Nigerians. This indicates a refusal to listen to the people, and any consequences from these protests will stem from government orchestration against the demonstrators. Those currently in power, who previously protested against the status quo, should recognize that trying to stifle dissent is unwarranted. Anyone in government doing this lacks genuine concern for the masses and should not be given a second chance in future political campaigns.”

The NRM urged the government to uphold democratic principles by addressing the people’s grievances and engaging in meaningful dialogue rather than resorting to force.

Fayoyin stressed the importance of government officials genuinely serving the populace to restore faith in Nigeria’s political system. “Anyone seeking to serve in government must be willing to listen to the people, as democracy is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. We must practice what we preach; otherwise, public trust in politicians will be irreparably damaged.”

He called on all politicians to collaborate in building the country instead of undermining the trust of Nigerians. “I urge the President and state governors to communicate with the people in an understandable manner rather than resorting to displays of force.”

On Thursday, Nigerians protested nationwide, particularly against the rising cost of living. Prior to this, some groups allegedly backed by the government attempted to disrupt the planned protests. During the August 1st protests, some demonstrators were attacked by these anti-protesters.
