Following President Tinubu’s directive to released the detained minors over the #EndBadGovernance protests, a group called, Kick Out Power Abuse (KOPA) has expressed cautious optimism in response to the president directive ordering the immediate release of detained minors and their reunification with families across the nation.
This is according to a statement released on Monday through by the group spokesman, Shuaibu Absulwasiu, that the directive marks a necessary step toward addressing the unjust treatment of the vulnerable children.
The group also called for urgent and comprehensive actions to ensure justice, accountability, and lasting reform.
“While the announcement of a committee to investigate the arrests and detentions is a positive move, KOPA stresses the need for transparency, thoroughness, and swift follow-through in this process. Nigerian citizens, families, and affected communities deserve to know that their government will not tolerate abuses of power within its institutions.”
“Any meaningful response to this situation must go beyond release alone,” said KOPA’s spokesperson. “It requires clear accountability for those responsible and a public commitment to preventing such abuses from happening in the future.”
We strongly support the President’s stated commitment to investigate all law enforcement officials involved, with assurances that any abuse will lead to appropriate consequences. Justice demands a thorough investigation to restore public trust, and it is imperative that the government communicate openly and act decisively in delivering this.
KOPA also urges the government to offer immediate medical, psychological, and financial support for these minors and their families to aid in their recovery from the trauma endured. These children, Nigeria’s future leaders, deserve a clear demonstration of the state’s commitment to their protection and well-being.
As advocates for human rights, KOPA will continue to monitor the case closely to ensure follow-through on these promises and accountability for any abuses uncovered. This situation must serve as a turning point, ensuring that power abuse is not tolerated, and that every child in Nigeria is guaranteed safety, dignity, and justice.
The President directed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction to immediately see to the welfare of those minors, and also take part to ensure their smooth reunion with their parents or guardians wherever they are in the country.
