APC Chieftain Explains Why Nigeria Is Sliding Into One-Party System
Amid concerns that the Nigerian political system may be sliding into a one-party state, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Chidi Oforegbu says the dominance of the ruling party is a result of strategy and planning and not the collapse of democracy.
Oforegbu, who spoke on the Signature Morning said the ruling party came into power with clear vision and structure and that its continued strength is anchored on deliberate planning to remain in power.
He attributed the weakness and instability of opposition parties to poor organisation and lack of long-term strategy.
Ofoegbu noted the lack of strong ideological foundations for most political parties in Nigeria which he said has further weakened the role of the opposition in the country.
He however stated that the growth of Nigeria’s political system depends on moving beyond regional politics and focusing on identifying and supporting competent leaders, regardless of their region or background.
