Nigerian Girls Released After Detention in Mauritius, NiDCOM Confirms

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed the release of a group of Nigerian girls who were detained at Mauritius International Airport, following widespread public outcry over their ordeal.

In a statement issued by its Digital Media Unit on Monday, the commission said the girls have regained their freedom and are currently travelling back to Nairobi.

The incident drew national attention after a viral social media video showed the Nigerians in detention, prompting calls for urgent intervention by the Federal Government.

According to NiDCOM, its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, is working with the relevant Nigerian Embassy, which has formally engaged the Mauritian authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the detention, ensure accountability, and prevent a recurrence.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Nigerians abroad, describing the intervention as part of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda for citizens at home and in the diaspora.

The girls had reportedly been held at the Mauritius airport since July 31, 2026.

However, NiDCOM did not disclose their identities, the specific reasons for their detention, or when they are expected to arrive in either Nairobi or Nigeria.

Mauritian authorities are yet to issue an official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
