Niger Deaths: FG Condoles Families Of Deceased Miners, Assures Thorough Investigation
The Federal Government has expressed condolences to the government and people of Niger State over the deaths of persons arrested during enforcement operations against suspected illegal mining activities in the Wushishi/Lukoto axis of the state.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, conveyed the Federal Government’s condolences to Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, the traditional leadership and people of Wushishi, as well as the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.
Idris said the Federal Government regarded the protection of the lives, dignity and fundamental rights of Nigerians as a solemn responsibility, stressing that the circumstances surrounding the deaths required a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation.
The minister assured the families of the deceased and the people of Niger State that the Federal Government shared in their grief and remained committed to establishing the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
He noted that immediate steps had already been taken to establish the facts, including the suspension of the Niger State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Suberu Siyaka Aniviye, by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
Tunji-Ojo had also directed a full investigation into the incident.
“The swift action taken by the Honourable Minister of Interior underscores the seriousness with which the Federal Government views this matter. The investigation will be allowed to establish exactly what happened, and the Government assures Nigerians that appropriate action will be taken based on its findings,” Idris said.
The minister stressed that although the Federal Government remained committed to tackling illegal mining and other unlawful activities that threatened national security, economic resources and the environment, enforcement operations must be carried out within the law and with respect for human life and dignity.
“There will be no attempt to shield anyone found culpable. At the same time, we mustn’t prejudge the outcome of the investigation. The Government’s responsibility is to ensure that the facts are established and that justice is served,” he said.
Idris appealed for calm in Wushishi and across Niger State, urging residents and other concerned parties to allow the investigation to proceed without interference.
The minister also prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and for strength and fortitude for their families, the Wushishi community and the government and people of Niger State.
Solid Minerals Minister Deploys Team
The Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, while sending out his condolences to the state and family of the victims, disclosed that a team had been deployed to assist with the investigation into the cause of death
”It is with profound shock and deep sorrow that I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Governor of Niger State, His Excellency, Mohammed Umaru Bago, and the entire people of the state over the tragic loss of lives among detained citizens in Minna.”
”Given the allegation that the detained persons were arrested on suspicion of carrying out illegal mining, I have deployed a high-powered team of officials to Niger State to investigate the circumstances and ascertain the facts of the matter.”
”The team will collaborate with other investigators to provide a comprehensive report on the incident,” the minister said in a statement on Friday.
Alake also praised the efforts of the governor of Niger State in trying to get to the root of the matter
”I commend Governor Bago’s swift administrative response in declaring a period of mourning and establishing an investigative framework to uncover the full circumstances of this unfortunate incident.”
”A thorough, transparent, and independent inquiry is vital to ensure accountability and prevent any recurrence of such distress in our detention and correctional facilities.”
”May the Almighty comfort the families affected and grant the souls of the departed eternal rest,” he said.
