The Abia State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) failed to mark the May 1 Workers Day amidst deepening crisis plaguing the council.

Recall that the leadership of the state NLC has been factionalized between Comrade Uchenna Obigwe and Comrade Eze Idima, a matter which is before a Federal High Court.

Daily Independent, which monitored the celebration, reports that the situation created confusion for workers as the faction led by Comrade Obigwe declared that the celebration be done in low key while the faction led by Comrade Idima celebrated the event with prayers and thanksgiving service.

The venue used for the annual event at Ibeku High School in Umuahia was under lock and key whereas the faction led by Idima held its celebration at a private event centre also in Umuahia.

In an address presented during the event, the state deputy chairman, Comrade Hope Ekwuruibe, commended the government while pledging the unalloyed support of workers of the state, promising that workers would give their best in the service of the state.

On check-off dues owed to various industrial unions, the deputy state chairman reminded the state government of arrears of check-off dues.

“The arrears for some unions are up to 13 months. As the government is aware, check off dues are part of the salary; we request the governor to direct the release of funds for the payment.”

Speaking to our reporter in a chat, Comrade Obigwe said the event was held on a low key as a result of the situation of workers in the state.
