Abuja under lockdown over security concerns
For the second day on Thursday, Abuja, the Nigerian Capital was under lockdown over security concerns.
The Military and police operatives blocked access into Abuja city center, leaving both commuters and motorists stranded.
For many Abuja residents, the reality of insecurity was bought home on both Wednesday and Thursday. Security operatives who blocked access into the Abuja city from the Keffi, Kaduna/Niger and the lokoja axis searched every vehicle plying the routes. The result was a gridlock that forced workers who left their homes early in the morning to trek many kilometers to work.
Some motorists who managed through the snarling traffic converted their vehicles to commercial use and commuters paid more than double the normal fare just to get to their destination no matter how late.
Some officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) tried to clear the traffic confusion which developed as motorists tried to maneuver the gridlock.
Youth Corp Members who were going for their Community Development Service were delayed for hours, just as many traders carried their wares on their head to get to their destination.
