APC Chieftain challenges dissolution of NWC in Court

In defiance of President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive at the last National Executive Committee, NEC, of the All Progressives Congress, APC, that no member should go to court over the dissolution of the National Working Committee, NWC, of the APC,
a Chieftain of party, Mr Kalu Agu has sued the APC at the Federal High Court in Abuja, challenging the dissolution of the National Working Committee of the party led by the former Chairman, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole.

Mr. Agu, a Youth Leader of the party in Abia State, Southeast Nigeria is challenging the powers of the National Executive Council, NEC that dissolved Mr. Oshiomhole’s led NWC less than four years in office as allowed by law.

In the suit, Mr. Agu is asking the court for an order, setting aside the dissolution of the NWC by the NEC which took place during a meeting last month held at Nigeria’s Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He is also praying the court for an order restraining the current National Caretaker Committee from parading themselves as national officers of the APC.

The Plaintiff also asked the court for an order restraining the National Caretaker Committee from putting into effect the resolution of the party’s NEC meeting passed on June 25, 2020.

Furthermore, the Plaintiff requested an order restraining Nigeria’s Electoral Umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC from recognising the current caretaker committee.

According to Mr. Agu, the Nigerian Constitution guaranteed four-year tenure for party officials; hence the resolution of the NEC on June 25, 2020, to dissolve the NWC was unconstitutional.

The Plaintiff among others also prayed the court to declare that the setting up of the caretaker committee for APC by the NEC on June 25, is unconstitutional, illegal, null and void and of no effect.

Meanwhile, no date has been fixed for hearing the suit at the time of filing in this report.
