ASUU EXTENDS STRIKE TO ONE MONTH EXTRA AFTER THE ELAPE OF THE THREE MONTHS INITIAL EXTENTION
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has extended its five months strike that commenced on the 14th of February, 2022 to an additional one month.
The strike is due to the inability of the Federal Government to implement a Memorandum of Action (MoA) agreed by ASUU and the Federal Government in 2020.
The decision of extension was a result of a meeting of the National Executive Council of the union held at the Comrade Festus Iyayi National Secretariat, University of Abuja, Abuja on Sunday 31st of July, 2022.
ASUU National President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke in a statement on Monday, said the extension of the strike is to enable the Federal government to resolve all issues raised by ASUU. In his speech, he stated that “Following extensive deliberation and taking cognisance of Government’s past failure to abide by its own timeline in addressing issues raised in the 2020 Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN)/Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) Memorandum of Action (MoA), NEC resolved that the strike be rolled over for four weeks to give the Government more time to satisfactorily resolve all the outstanding issues. The extension of the strike is with effect from 12:01 am on Monday, 1st August 2022”.
