The Supreme Court has adjourned to Wednesday, 22nd February, two days to the presidential election, the case brought against the federal government by three state governments, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Kogi, over the terminal date for the continued use of old domination of the 200, 500 and 1000 naira notes.

At Wednesday’s sitting, the Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who is the arrowhead of the opposition to the February 10 deadline earlier set by the Central Bank of Nigeria, and Yahaya Bello, the Kogi state governor, were in court with their counsel.

The supreme court ruled that all other parties which have been joined in the case should consolidate their motions for a definite hearing on February 22nd.

By the supreme court decision, the old and new Naira Notes will remain legal tender until the determination of the case, a situation that prolongs the confusion and anxiety over the naira redesign policy.

At the end of Wednesday’s sitting, Kogi state governor Yahaya Bello appealed to Nigerians to be calm and peaceful. He said he has faith in the judiciary and that the apex court will do what is right in the general interest of Nigerians.
