Some Environmental Experts in Nigeria have tasked the government to adopt the circular economy model that creates immense benefits from job creation to increased internal revenue.

According to them, many countries have adopted this model which emphasizes the recycling of millions of tons of waste generated back into the economy, it also reduces pressure on the environment.

According to research, around 15 million people worldwide work as “waste pickers,” salvaging reusable or recyclable materials from garbage.

With over 100 billion tons of resources infused into national economies every year, some of these ranging from metals, minerals and fossil fuels to organic materials from plants and animals, experts say only 8.6% gets recycled and used again.

Available data reveals that about 300 million tons of plastic waste is generated every year, this is nearly equivalent to the weight of the entire human population.

With many countries now adopting the Circular economy model to tackle waste generation, which is the promotion of waste recycling, experts say this reduces pressure on the environment and possesses numerous advantages.

They add that African countries can reap immense economic benefits, as trillions made available yearly have not been assessed.

They believe bringing these informal waste pickers into formal work system as waste collectors and recyclers; can offer an immense opportunity to tackle unemployment challenges.
