Corruption Tori Webinar: 2023 Election, Politicians and Corruption
With over five months left for the 2023 general elections, an anti-corruption advocacy programme Corruption Tori, has organized a webinar, with the theme “2023 Elections: Reducing Corruption – Role of Politicians and Institutions”.
The Webinar series is part of Corruption Tori’s online engagement with politicians, civil society organizations and the populace on the role of institutions towards a corrupt free 2023 elections.
Speaking at the webinar, the spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed warned that 2023 elections will be marred by ethnic sentiments and violence if the security agencies and other stakeholders does not partner with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC in other to have a credible, free and fair elections.
He added that politicians at all levels seeking for political offices are desperate to get power at all means, and this means involves undermining the system.
Also speaking, the former presidential candidate of the Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party, ANRP, Tope Fasua said politicians in their quest for power, manipulate the entire electoral process from start to finish.
According to him, the manipulation of the process starts from the selection of party members who will become delegates to vote for party primaries to inducing the electorates with either cash or gift rewards.
The Enugu State governorship candidate of Labour party, Chijioke Edeoga who was part of the webinar called on Nigerians to hold their leaders accountable as it has become a culture to make electoral campaign promises to get the electorates support without fulfilling any of those promises.
He urged the media to always set agenda for public discourse on how to bring back true nationalism and the dangers of vote selling.
He also called on government to find a lasting solution to unemployment and illiteracy level in Nigeria is it makes room for voter aparthy, insecurity and election inducement.
Corruption Tori is an anti corruption television program produced by Signature Television and supported by MacArthur foundation to amplifiy the war on corruption.
Present at the webinar were politicians, civil society organizations, economists, journalist amongst others.
