Democracy Day: Buhari Addresses Nation, Vows to Tackle Poverty and Youth Unemployment
President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday addressed Nigerians as the country marks its 22 years of Democracy.
According to the President, Democracy Day is a celebration of freedom, and victory for one people, one country and one Nigeria.
While acknowledging that Nigeria was still on its way to become a mature democracy, the President said the country has witnessed and overcome in the last two years, a good number of challenges that would have destroyed other nations.
The number one citizen acknowledged that Nigeria is still faced with insecurity challenges and used the opportunity to commiserate with the families of those who lost their loved ones, especially security personnel in the line of duty.
He charged heads of security agencies to apprehend all the enemies of the state who are out to disrupt the peace of the nation and make the country ungovernable.
The President added that while his administration is seeking to bring criminals to justice, it is also working to address the roots of insecurity, which he described as poverty and youth unemployment.
Enumerating his achievements in office, the president said his administration has invested in agriculture, infrastructural development and projects aimed at making life easy for Nigerians.
He said his administration has lifted over 10.5 million Nigerians from poverty since 2015, through agriculture, small scale and medium enterprises, promising to do more before leaving office.
Buhari, added that he is committed to providing an enabling environment for free and credible elections in the nation.
