Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani said opposition lawmakers must muster the courage to speak up in chamber against alleged sabotage and delay in passage of amendments to the Electoral Act 2022 at the National Assembly.

This, he said, is a better alternative than the opposition accusing the National Assembly leadership of sabotaging reforms.

Sani stated this in an X post on Monday.

On January 22, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said loopholes in the Electoral Act 2022 were a major setback to the 2023 elections and could derail the 2027 elections if not plugged.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain accused the Senate of frustrating passage of amendments to the Electoral Act 2022, arguing that the “credibility of the 2027 general elections hinges on the urgency with which the Senate treats this crucial bill”.

Atiku added, “It is, therefore, imperative that the Senate finalises the amendments and ensures the updated law governs the conduct of the 2027 elections.

“Anything short of this is a deliberate attempt to rig the election long before the ballots are cast.”

In his X post, Sani said it was not enough for the opposition to raise alarm, noting that it must get its lawmakers on board.

The pro-democracy activist said, “The opposition raising alarm that the leadership of the National Assembly is slowing or sabotaging electoral reform should simply ask their lawmakers to muster the courage of standing up in the chamber speak out on same matter.”
