The Katsina State Police Command has enforced a directive from the state government imposing a 24-hour curfew in Dutsinma Local Government Area and a movement restriction from 7pm to 7am in the other 33 local government areas.
According to Police Public Relations Officer Abubakar Sadiq, this action was prompted by the escalation of violence during nationwide protests that began on Thursday.
Sadiq stated, “The 24-hour curfew in Dutsinma is essential for ensuring public safety and preventing further violence, vandalism, and looting, while the nighttime curfew in the rest of the state aims to deter criminal activities and maintain law and order.”
There were no reported fatalities during Thursday’s protests, but police arrested about 50 individuals for their involvement in the destruction and looting of public property.
He urged parents and guardians to discourage their children from illegal activities, including violent protests and vandalism. He also called on youths to exercise restraint and not be manipulated into violence.
The command, in cooperation with other security agencies, will conduct regular patrols to ensure compliance with the curfew, noting that violators will face consequences.
Sadiq appealed for public cooperation during the curfew hours to help maintain peace and order in the state.
