Enugu Command of NDLEA Publicly Destroys Illicit Drugs

The Enugu command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has organized public destruction of illicit drugs and other psychotropic substances as ordered by the federal high court in Enugu.

The drugs were destroyed by burning at the Enugu Phase 2, an old waste dump site.

The Enugu state commander of NDLEA, Idim Bassy said that the command was working hard to make Enugu state drug-free.
He called on the citizens to collaborate with the agency to keep drugs off the state.

Former inspector general of police Ogbonnaya Onovo, who was one of the dignitaries that witnessed the public destruction, called on Nigerians to join hands with NDLEA in the fight against illegal drugs, explaining that drugs influence people to commit many crimes.

The Chief Executive Officer, of NDLEA, Brig, Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa, who was represented by the director of the investigation Samuel Gazama, said that Enugu command of the agency seized 23,721.7948kg of illicit drugs between 2008 and 2022.

He said that the breakdown of the drugs to be burnt was Cocaine 21.699kg, Heroin 14.828kg, Amphetamine 0.0618kg, Methamphetamine 24.347kg, precursor chemicals 154.0kg, Cannabis sativa,23,225kg and pharmaceuticals 281.759kg.
He commended the contribution of international counterparts including the united states drug enforcement agency, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and other security agencies in the state for their support of the NDLEA.

The Enugu state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who was represented by his special adviser on information. Steve Orurua thanked the Enugu Chapter of NDLEA for their effort in tackling the abuse of hard drugs in the state.
He said that Enugu state was the safest state in the south East despite some security challenges, adding that the government would continue to give support to the agency to make sure that Enugu state is protected from illicit drugs.

The public burning of the illicit drugs was witnessed by the Enugu state governor, represented by his special adviser on information Hon. Steve Orurua, the commander of the Enugu state chapter of the agency Idim Bassey, former inspector of police Ogbonnaya Onovo, commanders of the agency from various states, representatives from other security agencies in the state including the Enugu state police command, Dss, Nigeria civil defense and many other high government officials of Enugu state.
