Enugu REC To Citizens: Voter Registration Key To New States Creation
The Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in Enugu State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, has urged citizens of Enugu to take voters’ registration seriously, describing it as a decisive factor in the creation of new wards, local governments, and even new states.
Dr. Chukwu made this call during an exclusive one-on-one interview with Signature TV at his office in Independence Layout, Enugu, where he emphasized the pivotal role of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise, CVR.
According to him, beyond granting citizens the right to vote and be voted for, voter registration provides the statistical backbone for political restructuring—including the carving out of wards, local governments, and new states across Nigeria.
Highlighting the challenges in the South East region, the commissioner pointed out that despite having over 4,000 polling units in Enugu State, voter turnout remains a concern. However, since the commencement of the ongoing exercise on August 18th, 2025, more than 3,000 eligible citizens have already registered, a development he described as encouraging but still requiring greater participation.
Dr. Chukwu further assured residents of a seamless registration process, stressing that INEC staff have been adequately trained and provided with modern equipment to ensure transparency, speed, and credibility in the exercise.
