Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has claimed he “feels responsible” for Erik ten Hag’s sack on Monday.

The Premier League club decided to fire Ten Hag a day after the team lost 2-1 at West Ham.

United have since appointed Ruben Amorim as their next substantive coach, but former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is in interim charge.

Fernandes scored his first goal of the season in the 5-2 win over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

The Portugal midfielder also got his first in the league on Sunday, as the Red Devils drew 1-1 with Chelsea.

Speaking after the match, Fernandes said: “I always gave 100% and Erik ten Hag is aware of that. I spoke to ten Hag and apologised to him. I was disappointed he had gone and I tried to help him. I wasn’t scoring goals. We are not scoring goals and I feel responsible.”
