A textile market in Kano popularly known as Kantin Kwari was engulfed by fire at midnight of Sunday, razing about ten shops at one of the malls in the market.
The fire which started in a building on Gidan Inuwa Mai Bayajidda Street with more than a hundred shops, burnt down all textile goods in about ten shops destroying goods worth millions of naira.
Witnesses during the incident said they did their best to contain the fire and salvage some items before the arrival of the fire service.
A shop owner Musa Abba recounts the ordeal of the outbreak.
He said, “The fire started around 10pm while we were parading the market for security. When we saw the fire we quickly alerted others and started to remove the goods we could to reduce the level of destruction.”
Another shop owner who lost everything was distressed while lamenting.
“God is the one who allows everything that happens to us, see all my goods now rubble. We hope the government will support us to recover,” he cried out.
The Kano State Fire Service Command identified the cause of the fire as a solar electricity fault.
Management of the Kantin Kwari textile market are calling for improved fire safety measures to forestall re-occurrence of fire outbreaks.
