Flood: One Dead, 2,634 Residents Affected In Yobe — SEMA

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency has said that recent flash floods left one person dead and 2,634 residents across the state affected.

It also said that 14 communities had so far been affected by the disaster.

The Executive Secretary of the agency, Mohammed Goje, who spoke while responding to the flood in the Potiskum Local Government Area of the state following a heavy rainfall, in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), however, said that work was in progress.

Goje explained that SEMA was currently providing life-saving assistance and early recovery support to victims of the recent flood disaster in Potiskum and its environs.

According to him, over 600 displaced persons who sought temporary shelter at Sabon Gari Primary School had benefited from the state government’s intervention.

The intervention includes daily meal support, cash support, and distribution of dignity kits among other relief materials to meet the immediate household needs for shelter and hygiene.

The Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, said the agency had activated the Maiduguri operations office, which immediately deployed a rescue team to the affected communities.

Preliminary findings from the assessments indicate that 21 communities across five wards of Potiskum have been affected.

Many houses, mostly mud structures, were destroyed, displacing a significant number of residents, with women and children making up the majority of the displaced population.
