Two weeks after the sack of the sole administrator for Rivers State Waste Management Agency RIWAMA, Felix Obuah, port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital is being taken over by heaps of refuse.

The State Government terminated the contract with private waste disposal contractors and directed the Chairmen of Port Harcourt City and Obio-Akpor Local Government Areas to immediately take charge of the evacuation of waste in their jurisdiction.

In the Akpajo area of the City, residents who spoke to Signature TV have called on the government of Rivers State to come to their aid as the uncleared refuse in their area is posing both health and business challenges.

Chu Obele, who lives with his family in the community said that, apart from the unsightly dumps, the refuse has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. He also blamed scavengers for scattering the waste sites.
