Ikoyi building collapse: Death toll now 36 – NEMA

The death toll from the collapse of the 21-storey building at 20, Gerrard Road, Ikoyi Lagos State, has increased to 36.

Acting Coordinator of the Lagos Territorial Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, disclosed this in a message to journalists on Thursday morning.

“So far, 36 people – 33 males and three females — have been confirmed dead, while there were nine survivors,” Farinloye wrote.

The survivors include eight males and one female.

The operation to rescue those trapped in the rubble of the 21-storey building, which collapsed on Monday, is still ongoing.

Recall that 14 persons were confirmed dead on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government had on Wednesday disclosed the names of those who survived the Ikoyi building collapse and are presently undergoing treatment at the Lagos Marina Hospital.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu read out the names and ages of the survivors while addressing the press at the site yesterday.
