Ilkay Gündoğan Retires from International Football, Potential Return to Manchester City on the Horizon
German midfielder Ilkay Gündoğan has officially announced his retirement from international football, marking the end of an illustrious career with the national team.
The 33-year-old, who recently captained Germany at the 2024 UEFA European Championship, has decided to focus on his club career.
“After a few weeks of reflection, I have come to the conclusion that it is time to end my national team career,” Gundogan said in a German FA statement.
“I look back with great pride on 82 international matches for my home country – a number that I could never have dreamed of when I made my debut for the senior national team in 2011.”
Gundogan, who turns 34 in October, was in the German team that reached the Euro 2024 quarter-finals before losing to eventual champions Spain after extra time.
“My highlight was clearly the huge honour of being able to lead the team as captain at our home European Championship last summer,” said the Barcelona midfielder.
Speculation is growing that Gündoğan might consider a return to Manchester City, where he spent seven successful years before joining Barcelona.
His experience and leadership could make him a valuable asset to City if a move materializes.
