I’m active to play table tennis at top level, says Oshonaike
Despite exiting the women’s singles in the first round at the ongoing Durban 2023 WTTC, Africa’s longest-serving women’s table tennis player, Olufunke Oshonaike is not yet in a hurry to quit, adding she is still in good form to rub shoulders with some of the world’s best.
Oshonaike who was beaten 4-0 by France’s Camille Lutz in the first round, was excited with the quality of organisation put up by South Africa in hosting the World Championships.
“I think for now, I am still competitive in tournaments and for me, I am still going to be playing at world level because I am still ranked in the world,” she explained. “To play at the World Championships, you have to qualify and that is why I am in Durban.”
She, however, expressed excitement over the ongoing WTTC in Durban, describing it as an inspiration to African players considering the quality of the venue coupled with the standard of hotel and feeding.
She said: “I am proud to be an African woman looking at what South Africa has done with the organisation and hosting of this kind of event.
“ When I got in here, I did not know I was in Africa because it was as if we were in Europe. Even some of the players from Europe and Asia could not believe Africa could put up a good organisation like this.
“ I am happy to be part of this history and I hope this will show the world that Africa is unique and beautiful, even better than anywhere in the world,” she added.
