Iranian President’s Helicopter Found, Fate of President, Others Unclear

Iranian news outlets are reporting that the crash site of Iranian President’s helicopter has been located and the helicopter found but no news has been released on the fate of the Iranian President  and others involved in the crash.

Reuters news agency, quotes an anonymous Iranian official as saying “information coming from the crash site is very concerning,”

According to Reuters, State TV quoted an official as saying at least one passenger and one crew member had been in contact with rescuers. 

Rescue operations continued through the night for President Raisi and Eight  others involved in the helicopter crash Sunday.

The helicopter, a Bell 212, inherited from the Former Shah Government over 45 years ago, crashed near Varzaqan, Iran, while en route to Tabriz from Khudafarin. 

The helicopter was carrying President of Iran Ebrahim Raisi, foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, governor of East Azerbaijan province Malek Rahmati, and Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem, the representative of the Supreme Leader in East Azerbaijan.

The crash is coming at a time tension in the area is high especially between Iran and Israel  who had attached each other in recent months.

Middle Eastern countries have expressed solidarity with the Iranian government and people while others including the European Union are offering technical help.

Though in accordance with the Iranian constitution, in the absence of the President the Deputy President takes over, experts say a silent power struggle is expected  in the days to come.

However in his first official reaction to the incident, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, reassured Iranians,  there would be no disruption to state affairs.
