Kwale-Asaba Expressway grounded as Ndokwa people protest neglect
The federal government owned Kwale/Asaba Expressway was completely shut down Thursday morning as women, youths and the aged blocked the entire highway in protest over what they called “neglect by the federal government”.
Vehicular moment along the corridor was completely grounded as the protesters, though peaceful, chanted war songs marching towards oil facilities in that area. Some of the placards displayed by the people read, “Give us light, we cannot supply others without having light”, “Federal Government stop alienating us, we need social amenities”.
The protesters, according to eye witness report, complained among other things that the federal government was serving other parts of the country with electricity drawn from Okpai Power Station in Ndokwa land, while the people were left in darkness.
The Kwale/Asaba expressway in Delta State, connects the South West and the South South as well as the South East to the entire Northern part of the country. The corridor also serves as transit route for agriculture and other products to and from the the South to other parts of the country.
