A legal practitioner, Uche Maduemesi has advised Nigerian authorities to define the role of different agencies in the enforcement of road traffic regulations including the compulsory third party insurance policy for vehicles.

Maduemesi who appeared on Signature Morning on Signature Television said there appeared to be some confusion between the Vehicle Inspection Officers, the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police Force on who should enforce the laws.

He however explained that the enforcement of the compulsory third-party insurance policy is not new in the country and that every vehicle owner is expected to obey the law.

He spoke on the benefits of the policy to motorists and their passengers.

The legal practitioner however observed that several government offices and agencies were not complying with the law and wondered how they expect citizens to comply.

Maduemesi also indicted the insurance companies for alleged failure to indemnify some policyholders which he said is largely responsible for the apathy shown by many Nigerians in taking up insurance policies.

The various state commands of the Nigeria Police Force began an aggressive enforcement of the Third-Party Motor Insurance this week following a directive from the Inspector General of Police.

This led to the arrest of some motorists who were caught unaware and the impounding of their vehicles for lack of any valid insurance policy.
