A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atika Ajanah, has insisted that the ruling party is not divided concerning the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Speaking on Channels Television’s The 2023 Verdict on Monday, Ajanah said that the party stands with President Muhammadu Buhari.
“We are not divided, that is what the opposition like to make others believe, because some of our governors have come out to say we feel the pain of the people. We are not just going to go the way of the CBN or what the Attorney General of The Federal have come to say to the people and so people are now looking to the governors.
“The governors interact with the people directly, they deal with the locals, they know more than anyone what the people are feeling and hearing from them is reassuring, that is what they have come out to do clearly. So we are not divided against each other, we are with the president,” Ajanah said.
Ajanah, who is the Assistant Secretary Protocol and Events of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, said that the President in his speech on Sunday explained there is going to be light at the end of the tunnel.
Noting that the ruling party is taking Buhari’s words on that, she maintained that their worry is only the masses whom she said this policy affect the most.
Ajanah added that they are expecting the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to go back to the President and discuss the policy again having seen what is happening on the streets of Nigeria.
Some governors of the APC have become the strongest opposition to the naira redesign policy and went ahead to get a Supreme Court injunction stopping the February 10 deadline for the validity of the old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes.
However, in a broadcast on Thursday, President Buhari only approved the recall of the old N200 notes while he said the old N500 and N1,000 seize to be legal tender. Some of the APC governor have instead issued directive that all old notes continue to be a legal tender in their respective state contrary to the President’s directive.
After the last proceedings on the matter on February 15, the Supreme Court adjourned to February 2022 (tomorrow) which is four days to the Presidential and National Assembly elections.
