The House of Representatives has summoned the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu and Controller General of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Gambo Muhammed, over the accidental discharge that led to the death of Ndubuisi Emenike.
The House committee Police Affairs, Nigeria Armed Forces and other relevant committees were charged with the investigation.
Ndubuisi, who was the Senatorial candidate of Action Alliance (AA) in Imo North at the 2019 general election, was killed by an NSCDC official attached to the VIP during the victory party held for Miriam Onuoha winner of the just concluded Okigwe North Federal Constituency election.
The decision to summon the IGP and the CG of NSCDC followed a motion of urgent public importance moved on Thursday by the deputy chief whip of the House, Nkirikah Onyejeocha.
Moving the motion, Onyejeocha said that “there has been several instances of where the members of the security agencies had used their firearms for purposes other than the protection of lives and properties, including but not limited to discharging and shooting at public events as rallies, wedding, burial etc, often for amusement and wild celebration.”
She expressed worries that if action is not taken to address and regulate Security agencies on the use of firearms, more lives will be wasted needlessly and Nigerians will lose faith inability of law enforcement to handle firearms.
The house, therefore, mandated the IGP of police to investigate and bring to justice the culprit and other killings attributed to the wrongful use of firearms.
Also, the Nigeria Police, Army and other security agencies authorized to carry fire arms to desist/ be prohibited from shooting/ discharging firearm for amusement, celebrations, jubilation or otherwise other than for the purpose of protection.
