New Labour Laws Affecting Trade Union Movement In Nigeria – NLC
The Nigeria Labour Congress NLC says some changes in the country’s labour laws are affecting the tempo of trade unionsm in the country.
The Enugu State Chairman of NLC, Fabian Nwigbo who featured on Signature Morning, a Signature TV morning show stated that the new laws have impacted the ability of trade unions to organize, bargain collectively, and engage in strike actions.
Nwigbo stated that the present labour law requires that certain stringent conditions must be met before embarking on strike and that such strikes must be called off once the employer calls for negotiation or dialogue.
He said that those accusing labour leaders of failing in their duty of championing the course of workers are living in the past.
The NLC chairman however stated that the labour leaders are still doing their best under the prevailing circumstances to improve the welfare of Nigerian workers claiming that Nigerians would have been buying fuel at about three thousand naira now if not for the intervention of labour.
Nwigbo confirmed that the Federal government has given out 90 Compressed Natural Gas CNG Buses to the Nigeria Labour Congress and expressed the hope that the deployment of the buses and the ones procured by the Enugu State government will go a long way to alleviate the plight workers and other Nigerians.
