Nigerian Situation Room on Edo Politics
Civil Society Organizations under the Nigerian Situation Room have commended the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for introducing the election result viewing portal in the Edo governorship election.
The situation room said that the result viewing portal introduced a high level of transparency in the election.
The group also commended the violence-free election in Edo state which was enhanced by the peace effort by various groups including INEC, the National Peace Committee led by the former head of state Abdulsalami Abubakar and the Oba of Benin.
The group however observed that the challenge of vote-buying was still prevalent and called for effective enforcement of legislation that bars or punishes vote-buying.
The Nigerian Situation Room also wants INEC to address the delay in the commencement of elections and arrival of voting materials which seemed to have created voter frustration in the Edo election.
The group commended the security agents for their professional conduct expressing the hope that the overall improvement in the conduct of the Edo governorship election will be carried forward to other elections.
