The National Population Commission, NPC, says Nigeria’s population has hit 206.3 million as at mid-2020, with a growing average rate of 2.55%.
The Acting Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Eyitayo Oyetunji, made the disclosure in an interview with newsmen on Monday at the launch of the Digitization of Registration and Certification of Birth and Death in Abuja.
He said estimates and projections were being made through Geographic Positioning System, GPS, and other technologies to determine the estimated number.
Dr Oyetunji reiterated that the recent digitization of civil registration, would enable the commission to give an accurate account of the birth and death that have been recorded nationwide.
“We are the foundation for the ID card program and without a digitized platform, the vision will not be achieved. We have not been able to analyze and publish our data regularly as we should but with today’s launch, we shall be able to account for all the birth and the death that has been registered nationwide.”
Dr. Eyitayo also expressed the readiness of the commission to conduct a digitized census if the government gives approval and security issues improve.
“For the first time ever, the National Population Commission is ready to conduct a census that is based purely on technology for our demarcation exercise which has started. we are using satellite imagery and GPS positioning systems and all the latest technology available. For us in NPC today we are ready to conduct a census.”
