Nkpor community riots as police kills young man

Pandemonium erupted at Ezego Street, Agulu Avenue by New Tyre, NKPOR, in Idemili North local government area of Anambra State as police task force on COVID-19 attached to Okpoko Police station shot dead a young lad at about midday on Wednesday.

The young lad, who was identified as Ebuka, fell to the bullets of the police task force when the enforcement agents were in pursuit of some residents of the area alleged to have been drinking at a joint along Ezego Street, Agulu Avenue Nkpor.

An eye witness said the young lad who was sent to buy foodstuffs for the family, turned to run upon sighting the people running, but slipped and fell and the police task force shot at him at close range and he died on the spot.

Young men from the entire Nkpor mobilized immediately and went into rioting, alleging unwarranted provocation before the shooting of the innocent lad.

The police COVID-19 task force team alleged to have come from Okpoko police station in Onitsha immediately sped off upon sighting the angry youths leaving the young lad writhing in his pool of blood.

Efforts made to reach the police in Okpoko for their side of the story was not possible as they were not willing to comment on the issue.

The state owned Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS confirmed the story.

As at the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the state government, but traditional and opinion leaders were trying to calm the rampaging youths.
