The governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, on Sunday visited the governor of Rivers State, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Capital.

Although, the purpose of the visit was not immediately known, political analysts say it is not unconnected with the recent move by the Edo State Governor to join the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and contest the September 19 gubernatorial election on it’s platform.

Governor Obaseki was last Friday (democracy day) screened out by the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship screening committee on allegations of inconsistencies in some of his documents.

The embattled governor, however, refused to appeal the decision of the committee, but rather moved to join the opposition PDP to seek to run for the governorship race in Edo State.

The governor’s visit to Rivers State is seen by many as a deft move to lobby the powerful governor Nyesom Wike to help him secure the support of the governors of the PDP states and other powerful members of the opposition party to enable him run for the September election.

The PDP had over the weekend said that the Edo State Governor is welcome to the party, but he will not be accorded special privileges to contest the election on the platform of the party.

The Edo State governorship election scheduled for 19th September will be contested by 18 political parties and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has already released detailed guidelines for the conduct of the party primary elections.
