Ondo Police uncover cause of fire outbreak at INEC office
The Nigeria Police have attributed the cause of fire outbreak at the INEC headquarters in Akure last week to faulty electrical appliances at a store where over 5,000 card reader machines were destroyed.
Briefing newsmen in Akure, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Bolaji Salami said the outcome of an investigation carried out by federal fire service showed that electrical surge from the air conditioners inside the containers housing the card readers.
The fire that razed the Independence National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Akure, Ondo State, destroyed thousands of card readers.
The inferno started at about 8.20 p.m. and consumed a large container.
Fire Service arrived at the scene one hour later but their equipment failed to function.
Festus Okoye, INEC Information Commissioner, assured that the occurrence would not stop the poll.
5,141 card readers to be used for the Ondo governorship election were burnt.
However, INEC has deployed an additional five Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) and three National Commissioners (NCs) for the Edo governorship poll.
