Otedola Congratulates Pope Leo, Shares Photo Of His Visit To Nigeria
Billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola, has congratulated the newly elected Pope, Leo XIV, formerly Robert Cardinal Prevost, on his historic election as the 267th pontiff.
Otedola, who serves as the chancellor of Augustine University, took to Instagram on Friday to share a photograph of the pontiff during his 2016 visit to the Augustinian community in Abuja, Nigeria.
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Governing Council, and Management of Augustine University Ilara, Epe, Lagos State, I, Femi Otedola CON, Chancellor, proudly congratulate our new Pope, Leo XIV @Pontifex, a devoted Augustinian Priest from whom our University draws its name and heritage,” he stated.
Following his election, Otedola said, “We are especially proud that His Holiness visited the Augustinian community in Abuja , in 2016, where he commissioned key projects. We pray for God’s guidance as he undertakes the sacred responsibility of leading 1.5 billion Catholics around the world.”
Prior to his emergence as the head of the Catholic Church, Prevost visited Nigeria in 2016.
Now known as Pope Leo XIV, the new American pontiff visited Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, almost a decade ago as part of his duties as an Augustinian leader, engaging with members of the order and the broader Catholic community.
After that, he was spotted posing with Catholic leaders, some believed to have accompanied him from abroad, while others were Nigerian clergy dressed in black and white cassocks.
“For the first time, General Chapter of the Order of St. Augustine on the African continent — Abuja, Nigeria,” the post which was translated from Spanish to English, reads.
The photo was dated September 29, 2016. At the time, Leo was Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru.
