The Enugu State Police Command has identified, traced and arrested the three policemen involved in the assault of citizen – Justice Obasi.

In a tweet from its official handle the Nigeria Police said the action was taken on the directive of the Inspector General of Police

The IGP’s intervention followed public outrage in the social media and pressure from the media including signaturetv.org.

Ebere Amarizu, Enugu State Police Command Spokesman confirmed the  arrest of the police personnel in an interview with signaturetv.org Monday afternoon.

While briefing the media in Enugu, the State Commissioner of Police Ahmed Abdurrahman said the officers included; two Non Commissioned Officers (NCO) and one police constable. He did not give their names.

Abdurrahman said a panel had been set up and given three days to conclude its work and report back to the command through the Commissioner’s office.

“After the panel’s three days’ work, we will look into the panel’s findings and recommendation.

“Then, they will definitely face orderly room trial and after all these we know what level of punishment will be meted on them,’’ he said.

However in a phone interview with signaturetv.org in Enugu, the victim Justus Obasi who was released from hospital about 3pm today Monday, 6th January,  2020 said it was a harrowing experience to be abused by those paid to protect him as a Nigerian citizen.

He said he was not aware that any of the policemen has been arrested as no official of the Nigeria Police has contacted him since the ugly incident to find out what really happened.

He wondered what information the Police will be acting on, since they have not contacted him who was brutalised by their men.

Justus Obasi, a Fashion designer, was accosted by a team of three policemen about 10:15 am on 4th of January, 2020 around Kenyetta Market Enugu.

They seized his phone and when he demanded for the return of his phone he was molested by the Policemen who labelled him a “Yahoo boy”, threatened to arrest him and hand him over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC

The intervention of a passerby who was said to be a retired Police officer, saved Mr Obasi from the hands of the Policemen.
